Our Mission at KIMA is to prevent and eliminate musculoskeletal pain by restoring the body to its maximally functioning and efficient state. Many of the injuries and pain that we see everyday could be prevented, if only someone looked for the pattern of symptoms.
From its inception, KIMA has placed a very high priority on implementing assessment tools and programs for preventing injuries and slowing the progression of joint degeneration. Before being discharged from Physical Therapy as a patient at KIMA, you will be given information necessary to prevent the recurrence of your pain. You will also be trained in an individualized, lifelong home exercise routine to optimize efficiency in how you use your body. Onsite we will work with personal trainers, yoga, and Pilates instructors to increase your physical competency to maximize your potential for preventing and eliminating pain.
The KIMA Musculoskeletal Wellness Assessment (KMSWA) is a unique assessment tool developed to provide individuals with information on how to prevent injury and musculoskeletal pain. The results gained from the assessment will be compared to the norms by age and gender. The KMSWA works backwards to identify common patterns of musculoskeletal dysfunction to help prevent early onset Osteoarthritis, Shoulder Impingement and Tendonitis, knee pain, headaches, neck and low back pain. The screen is individualized, comprehensive, and designed to serve as a basis for exercise prescription, whether you are working alone or with a personal trainer or another fitness specialist (i.e. yoga, Pilates instructors). You will receive a comprehensive package which will include pictures of you, advice on your posture and correct sitting, ergonomics, specific stretching and strengthening exercises, and follow-up sessions to implement your program. Our aim is to improve general wellness and develop a well-rounded preventative exercise program that caters to your individual needs.
The KIMA Musculoskeletal Wellness Assessment (KMSWA) is divided into 4 parts:
1. General Health and Past Medical History:
- To include basic physiologic testing such as height, weight, and blood pressure.
- Nutrition, Stress, and Sleep Questionnaires.
2. Posture Analysis:
- Comparison photos of individuals’ sitting and standing postures against ideal with tips for correction.
3. Global Functional Tests:
- 14 tests of basic movements that are used in everyday activity. The aim of these tests is to assess fundamental movement patterns and identify strengths, weaknesses, and areas of imbalance.
4. Regional Functional Tests
- 20 tests designed to assess specific regional flexibility and stability compared to the population norms from the latest research and world renowned clinical specialists.
The KIMA Sport Prevention Screen was developed to optimize performance and prevent injury in sport. In a one-hour assessment a physical therapist will test sports specific skills and link them to injury risk and performance deficits. The therapist will help identify restrictions that cause compensatory movements that are linked to injuries and poor performance. Core tests will be performed that are linked to load or speed injuries, along with motor coordination tests that are linked to injury recurrence. Once your weak links and assets are identified you will be given a comprehensive program detailing retraining options. KIMA’s Sport Prevention Screen for tennis is currently being utilized by the USTA at their Boca Raton training facility, the US Olympics Headquarters and KIMA’s New York City clinic.
