Acupuncture is a technique that inserts and manipulates fine needles at specific points on the body. According to acupunctural teachings, this will restore health and well-being and it is particularly good at treating pain. Acupuncture is thought to have originated in China during the Han Dynasty (202 BC to 220 AD). This traditional Chinese technique is based on a paradigm different from scientific bio-medicine.
Acupuncture treats the human body as a whole and disease is understood as a loss of homeostasis among the several systems of function. Treatment of disease is attempted by modifying the energy within one or more systems of function through the activity of needles, pressure, heat, etc. on “acupuncture points” (small sensitive points on the body). There are over a thousand know acupuncture points on the body.
Treatment of acupuncture points may be performed along the twelve main or eight extra meridians located throughout the body, or on tender points called “ashi” (signifying “ that’s the spot” or “ouch”). Chinese medical theory holds that acupuncture works by normalizing the free flow of qi (“vital energy”) throughout the body. Pain or illnesses are treated by attempting to remedy local or systemic accumulations or deficiencies of qi. Pain is considered to indicate blockage or stagnation of the flow of qi, and an axiom of the medical literature of acupuncture is “no pain, no blockage; no blockage, no pain.”
