Derek Mansfield, B.Pthy, M.Pthy (Sports)
Physical Therapist
Derek is an Australian-trained Sports Physiotherapist with more than 17 years’ experience. He completed his undergraduate training at the University of Melbourne in 1995, and his Masters of Sports Physiotherapy at Latrobe University in 2012. He returns to New York having worked here many moons ago.
Derek has completed significant post-graduate continuing education, including the prestigious Level 3 Sports Course at the Australian Institute of Sport, and, among other things, advanced training in management of injuries of the shoulder and lower limb.
Derek has worked with elite & recreational athletes in sports as diverse as cycling, rugby union, fencing, tennis, diving & basketball. Derek has also had a long association with the sport of Volleyball at Australian State and National levels, as a player, coach and physiotherapist. Since 2003 he has worked with the Australian Men’s Indoor Program, touring Asia, Europe, the Middle East and South America.
Derek combines advanced clinical reasoning skills with an evidence-based approach to treatment in the management of his clientele. He has a strong grounding in manual therapy techniques & exercise prescription, and emphasizes education & understanding of causation with his patients. He has a special interest in the assessment and treatment of shoulder injuries, and also has an understanding of cycling biomechanics and bike fitting.
When not working Derek enjoys spending time with his young family, cooking, the odd drop of red wine and, when he can get away with it, can be found charging around Prospect Park on his bicycle.
